The “Penguin” was wrecked off the coast south of Wellington, on 12 February 1909, with the loss of 75 lives. The steamer was bound from Picton to Wellington.

Built in 1864, in Glasgow, Scotland. On arrival in New Zealand, the Penguin spent time on the Wellington to Lyttelton service, before spending time around the southern coast of Australia. In 1902 she came back to New Zealand and the Cook Strait service.
