ARRIVAL OF THE NELSON, FROM LONDON, WITH TROOPS.
|
|
The signal made at the Flagstaff, yesterday, first as a barque, and afterwards as a ship, turned out to be, |
upon rounding the North Head - not as many had expected, the Viscount Canning, but the fine iron |
clipper ship Nelson. The Nelson is a vessel of 1,248 tons, an iron vessel built in 1862 and is commanded |
by Captain C. Cobb, a gentleman spoken highly of by the passengers; and feel sure that Captain Cobb is |
deserving of all the commendations which were bestowed upon him. The Nelson is another of Messrs. |
Potter, Wilson, and Co's magnificent Clyde-built ships, from the same yard as the Victory, now in harbour. |
The Nelson's ways were, in fact, immediately taken up by the Victory on the former being launched. The |
Nelson sailed from the Downs on the 1st October, and after embarking troops at Cork, took her departure |
from thence on the 7th of the same month, passing outside Cape de Verde Islands, and sighted Madiera |
Island. The N E trades proved very light, and the Equator was crossed on the 14th November, in 27.5 deg |
W. Longitude. The S E Trades were also light, and the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope was made on |
the 10th December. Tristan D'Accunha was sighted on the 5th ultimo. The weather was very fine and |
pleasant after rounding the Cape, and she ran down her easting between the parallels of 45 deg and 47 |
deg south, passing to the south of Tasmania on the 12th, sighting the The Three Kings on the 18th, and |
and anchored off the North Head at 3pm yesterday, after a rapid run of eight days from Tasmania, and 40 |
days from the Cape of Good Hope. No vessels connected with the colonies were spoken with during the |
voyage. The Nelson brings 292 rank and file of the different Regiments, viz , 14th Regiment, 10, 18th, 76, |
40th, 52, 57th, 50, 65th, 65, 68th, 40, and the following offficers :- |
