The IONIC departed London on 3 October, 1890 and arrived in Wellington, via Plymouth, Teneriffe, Capetown and Hobart, on 18 November, 1890, with Captain William H Kidley in command.

ARRIVAL OF R.M.S. IONIC.

The lonic left London on 3rd October, and Plymouth at 5.38 pm next day. Teneriffe was reached at 11.5 am on 9th, and sailed again at 7 20 same evening. The NE trades were light. The Equator was crossed on 16th in long. 10dg W. and the SE trades blew with moderate strength to lat. 20dg S, when they freshened up and blew with strong force till arrival at Table Bay on the 25th; left same day, and the meridian of Cape Leuwin was crossed on 8th November. The easting was run down on an average parallel of 46dg. At 11.13 pm on 12th cast anchor in Hobart; sailed again at 4.30 following afternoon, passed Cape Farewell at 7.30 last evening, and anchored in harbour at 5.40 this morning. The weather experienced was principally fine, with calms.On the fifth instant, two days after leaving Hobart, experienced northerly gale, lasting about 24 hours. On 22nd October, Mrs. T. Young, a saloon passenger booked for Sydney, died from inflammation of the bowels. The deceased lady, who came on board in good health, only took ill after leaving Teneriffe. Much sympathy was felt for Mr. Young, who was on board, and who is well-known in Dunedin. The voyage has been an enjoyable one for the passengers, concerts, dances, and numerous other entertainments being indulged in, and on the night of the ship's arrival in Hobart a grand fancy dress ball was held. The best day's run was 331 miles. Forty-eight passengers and 260 tons of cargo were landed at Hobart. She has on board for New Zealand 128 passengers, 18 bags mail, 28 boxes parcel post, and 2000 tons of cargo. The total time occupied by the voyage was 44d 0h 21m; and steaming time 42d 17h 46m. The personnel of her officers is unchanged. The steamer was berthed at the Queen's Wharf at 8.30 this morning.
