ARRIVAL OF THE FERNGLEN.
The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s chartered ship Fernglen,
Captain Fraser, arrived off Nelson this morning with 250 Government
immigrants for Nelson and the West Coast. She left Plymouth on 12th
October, and has, therefore, made a quick run of 82 days. Definite
information having been received by the Government that there was no
demand for the immigrants at Nelson or the West Coast, instructions
were telegraphed this afternoon from the Immigration Office for the
ship not to stop at Nelson, but to come on immediately to Wellington.
The 140 immigrants who were bound for the West Coast of the South
Island will be forwarded instead to Wanganui, and the remainder will easily be absorbed by Wellington. We understand that all is well on board.

Nelson, Jan. 2.
Arrived—ship Fernglen,
eighty days from London, with 225 immigrants and six cabin passengers,
for Wellington. There were three deaths of children, and one birth, on
board. The ship will probably proceed to Wellington with all her
immigrants, tomorrow, they being principally for Wanganui.

THE FERNGLEN.
The Fernglen
arrived in harbor yesterday morning from Nelson, having been sent on
from that port in consequence of her immigrants not being required in
the district. She left Nelson on Friday morning. The Fernglen, which is
chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company, made a smart passage of
81 days from London, with 225 immigrants and 6 cabin passengers for
Wellington. The passage was an uneventful one. There was little or no
sickness during the voyage, only three deaths among children having
occurred. There was also one birth. The immigrants are well satisfied
with the treatment they received on board, and have presented Captain
Frazer and Dr. Sproule,
surgeon-superintendent, with flattering testimonials. Captain Frazer
reports leaving Plymouth on 12th October, and experienced southerly
winds for two days, when the wind veered to the N.W., and carried the
vessel to 34 deg. north latitude. It then veered to the W.S.W., and
blew a hard gale with terrific squalls for 24 hours, when it moderated,
the vessel passing the Island of Madeira on the 21st. The Equator was
crossed on 7th November in long. 32 deg. W. The easting was run down between the parallels of 43 and 47, the wind being light; sighted CapeLeuwin
on 21st December, and Cape Farewell on 1st January, arriving at Nelson
on the morning of 2nd January. Four vessels were spoken on the passage
out, none of which were bound for this colony.
Passengers from Cornwall on board the FERNGLEN that were for Marlborough.
