AORANGI
The AORANGI departed Plymouth on 17 December 1888 and arrived in
Wellington on 29 January 1888. Captain J A Sutcliffe was in command.

The RMS Aorangi arrived in harbour at midnight yesterday. Left Plymouth
on 17th December at 4 pm, and experienced strong NW to SW winds and high sea:
made Madeira on 21st at 10 pm, and proceeded at 6.40 am on 22nd; had light to
moderate NE trades to crossing the Equator on 29th; fell in with strong SE
trades in 8dg south, and arrived at the Cape at 5 pm on 7th January; left again
at 1 am on 8th; had moderate to strong westerly winds until arrival at Hobart
at 7 pm on 26th; left again at midnight, and had fine weather till arrival as
above. The time occupied from Plymouth to arrival off the Heads, including all
stoppages, was 42 days 20 hours. The trip has been an enjoyable one, fine
weather having been experienced for most of the journey The Aorangi brings 14
first saloon, 31 second saloon, and 56 steerage passengers for New Zealand
ports and landed 22 at Hobart for Australia. There were no deaths or births
during the voyage, and the passengers have all arrived in excellent health.
During the voyage there were the usual concerts, games, &c. The longest
day's run was 349 miles. The Aorangi brings about 3000 tons of cargo for all
ports. The mail consists of 345 bags from Plymouth, 1 package from Madeira, 1
bag from Capetown, and 2 bags and 3 packages from Hobart. Mr. Irvine is now
third officer, otherwise the officers are unchanged.
